A3 Multi-Camera 2D/3D-Technology
Project Leader
Prof. Dr. Otmar Loffeld, Prof. Dr. Andreas Kolb
Initial Situation
Optical, non-contact distance sensing techniques have been studied intensively during several decades. In general, one distinguishes triangulation, stereo vision and time-of-flight approaches.
Newer time-of-flight approaches rely on the modulation of the amplitude in combination with highly integrated optical mixers correlating the optical signal reflected by the scene with the reference signal of the illumination. These sensors are suited for the fast capturing (20 FPS or more) of range maps in a complete solid angle.
Objectives and Work Plan
The combination of 3D imaging sensor systems with a high resolution 2D camera is suited for a multi-modal, co-registered fusion of image data. The aim of the subproject is the creation of a technological base for the parallel and synchronous operation of multiple 2D and 3D cameras for capturing of larger observation areas. This research aim implicates both hardware-related and communication specific as well as algorithmic problems in the context of the data processing on sensor level and the scene monitoring.
