C3 Resolution Increase of Distance Sensing Systems

Project Leaders

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Otmar Loffeld, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Haring Bolívar

Initial Situation

Direct distance sensing, imaging Time-of-Flight sensors, according e.g. to the principle of the Photonic Mixer Device (PMD), feature, in direct comparison, with max. 204 x 204 pixels a considerably lower spatial scanning range, and thus lower lateral resolution, than 2D imaging sensors. The PMD measuring technology also implements de facto, as a generic representative of phase measuring distance sensing techniques, a one frequency phase measurement (bandwidth 0Hz), which is why two targets at different distances cannot be separated in the same pixel.

Aims and Work Program

The aim of this part of the project is to increase the distance resolution by means of Compressive Sensing (CS) in the time domain, as well as the CS operating distance on location range. Besides the mathematical foundation, research and efficient implementation of CS reconstruction methods, as well as algorithms, are the main focus in this context.
